Longflyball.com, The Official Website of Sports Movies, lists the Top 5 Sports Movie Romances for Valentine's Day
Orlando, FL (Bluehost) February 14, 2008 -- Some of the best sports movies of all time have included some of the best movie romances. So, Valentine's Day is the one time during the year that Longflyball.com takes a look at the Top 5 Sports Movie Romances.
Our unscientific criteria is that the romance has to be central to the storyline of the movie and there has to be either very memorable moments or the romance in general has to be a memorable one.
Unquestionably, our top sports movie romance has to go to Rocky Balboa and his girlfriend that becomes his wife, Adrian. We see them through their beginning courtship, marriage, and ultimately her death. It very well may be one of the all time great movie romances of all time, but it's certainly the greatest sports movie romance of all time. Of course, the famous line, "Yo Adrian," yelled out by Rocky Balboa from the boxing ring is also one of the most famous sports movie quotes.
Our second best sports movie romance of all time goes to Jerry Maguire for the romance between Maguire, played by Tom Cruise, and his single-mom assistant, played by Renee Zellweger. They become romantically involved and get married, go through the heart-tugging tough times and then come full circle by the end of the movie. In between, we get some more great sports movie quotes like, "You had me at hello," and "You complete me."
The number three top sports movie romance goes to Bull Durham for the romance between catcher Crash Davis, played by Kevin Costner and the baseball groupie/English teacher Annie Savoy, played by Susan Sarandon. Of course, Savoy also has a relationship with the big, dumb rookie pitcher, Nuke LaLoosh, played by Tim Robbins, but it's the relationship with Crash that is the memorable, hot and heavy romance. We also got some great quotes out of this one, like "I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days," from Crash/Costner and "making love is like hitting a baseball: you just gotta relax and concentrate," from Savoy/Sarandon.
The number four sports movie romance is not quite as obvious as the first three, but we're going with Fever Pitch, the story of the crazed Boston Red Sox fan Ben Wrightman, played by Jimmy Fallon and the new girlfriend Lindsey Meeks, played by Drew Barrymore. We chose Fever Pitch for a couple of reasons. First, the romance between the two is really the central theme of the movie, right alongside Wrightman's infatuation with the Red Sox. Also, there seemed to be great chemistry between Fallon and Barrymore that made the relationship more memorable. We also get the classic romantic scene where Meeks goes to Fenway Park to tell Wrightman that he shouldn't sell his Sox tickets and ends up running across the field. Another great thing about this movie, although not related to the romance, is that the Sox actually end up winning the World Series while they're shooting and of course, changing the ending that they had planned.
Our fifth most romantic sports movie goes to Cinderella Man, an incredible movie with Russell Crowe starring in the true story of boxer James Braddock and his up and down career during the Great Depression. This movie's romance comes in a different dose than our top four, with the romance coming in a more classic, "stand by your man" way, from Braddock's wife, played by Renee Zellweger. Nonetheless, Braddock's love of his wife and family and his wife's unwaving support and love for him, are central to the plot.
Top 5 Sports Movie Romances: 1. Rocky 2. Jerry Maguire 3. Bull Durham 4. Fever Pitch 5. Cinderella Man
