Weightcircles Upgrades Website for Healthy Weight Loss Community
Los Gatos, CA (PRWEB) October 11, 2007 -- Weightcircles, Inc. today announced the release of a new design for its popular social network for healthy weight loss, www.weightcircles.com. The Weightcircles website is a community to help people stick with healthier habits over the long term, often the most difficult part of losing weight. The site, which has been operating since January 1st of this year in an alpha version, will now offer more Web 2.0 features and provide greater interactivity.
Why Change? "People love the site the way it is, and we wanted to keep the warm, welcoming environment," says Gillian Verga, Weightcircles CEO. "The purpose of the site is to help people connect and interact, so we've added a lot of features that will help members see what's going on, as well as keep track of who they've talked to before." Some of the new features include a MyHome page for each member, which shows site activity at a glance, a Bookmark feature to keep track of others, and the ability to send private messages.
"Blogs, comments, and Circles, some of the most popular features of the site, are all still there," adds Verga. "What our members will notice first, of course, is a different color scheme and 'look and feel'. The visual changes are the most obvious, but more subtle changes make it easier to find people with whom you have a connection. Long term weight loss is about living your life differently, and you need strong emotional support to make lifestyle changes."
Combating Obesity Concern about obesity in America and other nations is on the rise, with two-thirds of Americans categorized as either overweight or obese, an increase from less than 50% in 1980. Understanding and combating obesity is an active area, from scientists researching how the body regulates fat levels, to groups advocating change in schools and communities to promote exercise and reduce junk food.
For individuals who want to lose a significant amount of weight, however, the solution has not changed: increased exercise and reduced caloric intake over a sustained period of time is the only way to lose weight. What's new is broader availability of tools and support groups on the internet that help people formulate, and stick to, a plan. Weightcircles is one of those tools that has been highly praised by its members.
One Weightcircles member, Lisa-Mei Ramsey, started dieting in January, but in March began to struggle to stick to her weight loss plan. "I had read in several medical journals that to be successful, a dieter needs a support group. That was when I found Weightcircles and it has been a "Diet Saver"." Ramsey has lost 86 pounds and is just 14 pounds away from her goal of losing 100 pounds. "Out of a lifetime of failures, I am finally finding success, thanks to Weightcircles and its members," she says.
Verga hopes more people can benefit from the Weightcircles community: "We're organized around Circles because there are all different kinds of people trying to lose weight. People think of middle-aged women when they think of weight loss, but weight control has become an issue for everyone. We have circles for men, for college students, for seniors. We also have Circles for different interests. The Christian circle and the Cheapskates circle -- for people trying to get healthy on a budget -- are examples of circles that draw people together who have something in common."
What's Next Weightcircles unveiled its new release early this month at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, the annual show of the American Dietetic Association. The response from the many dieticians and nutritionists who attended the show was overwhelmingly positive, and many of them plan to share the site with their clients. After today's release, Verga says, the team will spend some time fine-tuning features based on user feedback. After that, they have several more features in the planning stages that they think users will love. "We pretty much base all our product development on what our users ask for."
Weightcircles, Inc is a privately-held social networking company for healthy weight loss. Weightcircles is headquartered in Los Gatos, CA, on the edge of Silicon Valley.
